Hi everyone,
Emmerdale's 40th anniversary week is coming up at the beginning of March, and to help build the excitement, I will be here regularly to share some celebratory videos that were released by ITV. First up are two videos from mid-September 2012. Everyone can enjoy these fun video's called "Forty or Faulty" (parts 1 and 2), as they are 100% spoiler free!
In the past, clicking on these links hasn't always worked. If this is the case, simply copy and paste into your address bar! :)
Marie G recently asked if Amy and Kerry are related in real life. The answer is no, but Chelsea (Amy) does have a famous aunt called Jill Halfpenny. She's had notable roles in both of the other main British soaps and has appeared in various other shows that some of you may have seen such as Heartbeat, Shameless and Dalziel & Pascoe. Chelsea was apparently keen for Jill to play her mum, saying in February 2011: "It would be good if Jill played my mum. I'll have to put a word in. We used to live together and have a lot of the same mannerisms, so it would work really well. Apparently Amy is still in touch with her mum. So you never know - it could happen." A year later, Jill herself said: "I've told her I'll come in and play her druggy mum! Chelsea's wanted to act since she was little, and she's doing brilliantly". Laura Norton's casting as Kerry was announced three months later. Unfortunately I have no idea why Jill ended up not taking up the role. If you'd like to see Chelsea's Aunty Jill in action, take a look at this classic moment from BBC soap EastEnders from 2004: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkZM4pPIiU0 (the scene prior to this should appear on the right-hand panel if you wish to watch the act of revenge that led into this scene!)
AnnaS asked about how far Emmerdale is from Leeds. The official book celebrating 30 years of Emmerdale (the most recent book of its kind I'm sad to say) has this to say (with my own additions in square brackets).
"The nearest big city is Leeds, and it's a day trip to go there - but one that a number of villagers over the years have made for special shopping trips or dates [such as Leyla and Jacob (though of course they ended up stopping over!)]. A number of young villagers have studied at Leeds university. It's just possible to commute from Emmerdale to Leeds, but it makes for a long day, and most villagers soon tire of it and either move closer to their work or give up their job.
The nearest airport is Leeds/Bradford Airport [11km away form Leeds city centre] - flat out, on a motorbike, on a day with light traffic, not paying too much attention to speed restrictions, it's possible to get there from Emmerdale in just over an hour, as Biff proved when he took Ned Glover."
In real life, Leeds is of course the studio filming location for Emmerdale - and is eight miles away from the village set (this created a particular logistical problem when considering recording a live episode - more on that nearer the time!). More information follows on some of the real-world filming locations.
The Emmerdale studios are on Kirkstall Road, and in a scene with Rachel and Jai the other day a sign saying "Kirkstall Road Car Park" was clearly seen. In this map
https://www.dropbox.com/s/j477jrqen3cv2ve/Kirkstall%20Road%20Studios%20with%20hospital%20entrance%20marked.png the studios are the buildings next to the big car park - surprisingly enough by Studio Road! This has been their home since 2011. You may remember a few sets were redesigned around this time (often with no onscreen explanation such as Pear Tree Cottage (the Kings' office) suddenly shrinking). This also coincided with the move to filming in HD. These studios were the home of Yorkshire Television where most of their shows were made (including Emmerdale until it moved to dedicated studios in 1989) but had been closed in 2009 in a cost saving measure by ITV who now owned Yorkshire Television. Even prior to 2011, the front entrance to the studios was the usual location for the front of Hotten General Hospital. I have marked this spot with a yellow arrow.
Between November 1996 and 2011 Emmerdale's studios were on Burley Road - right underneath the word "Access" near the top of the photo. You'll have noticed in the recent scenes with Kerry that the hospital looked rather different - but I'm pretty sure that the new location was only the other side of that road! In this picture https://www.dropbox.com/s/2fj54hy9zj9euhg/Burley%20Road%20Studios%20%28with%20Burley%20Road%20marked%29.png, you can see the distinctive building that I think was used as the hospital more clearly on the right with the old studios at the bottom. The normal hospital entrance can be seen again on the left just above the zoom out button. The front of the police station was the exterior of the Burley Road studios - DCI Grace Barraclough died crossing the road to the studios, which I have marked in yellow. The Burley Road studios were officially opened by then Prime Minister John Major in January 1997, and were said to be the largest single floor TV production facility in the world. The move had been necessary because of the move from 2 to 3 episodes a week.
Emmerdale's home from 1989 to 1996 was a converted woollen mill in Farsley, 5 miles away. Emmerdale was now on screen an all-year round, having not taken a christmas break for the first time in 1988. Until the move to Farsley, everything - even Annie's kitchen and the Woolpack - had to be dismantled every week. In this map https://www.dropbox.com/s/27jg3us2mzhznlg/Sunny%20Bank%20Mills%20Studios%20%2B%20other%20studios.png the studios - which from 1997 were the studios for Heartbeat - are marked as point A. I've also marked in red the other two studios in the bottom right.
Extending further out of Leeds, in this picture
https://www.dropbox.com/s/magqbr23tz588hf/Esholt%20to%20Leeds.png the Farsley studios are at point A and the Kirsktall Road studios at point B. Near the top you can see the airport as mentioned earlier, while right at the top, literally underneath the arrow next to the zoom in button, is the village set! Also on the map you will see Esholt marked - Emmerdale's outside location from 1976 to 1998.
This picture https://www.dropbox.com/s/4wkf9vz8q2oaywa/Yorkshire.png shows the relationship between Esholt (at the very bottom of the screen) and the original village location, Arncliffe, shown at point A at the top. A little way above Esholt you'll find Otley, which is where scenes in Hotten (e.g. those with Holly) have often been filmed - though sometimes Leeds is used (the aforementioned police station and hospital for example). The original Emmerdale Farm was between Otley and Harrogate. The red point A is the location of Creskeld Hall in Arthington, known on screen as Home Farm. While at point B an x literally marks the spot on the Harewood Estate of the purpose built village - the B marker kept moving to the wrong place so I had to drag it to the correct spot and keep my finger on the button while I took the snapshot! To the left of Otley is Ilkley Moor, where the Barton crash was filmed - a shoot that proved controversial and cost Emmerdale an extra £26,000 - as seen in this news article: http://www.ilkleygazette.co.uk/news/9748060.TV_soap_bosses_to_pay_for___26_000_of_work_on_moor/
The final picture is an overview showing all the main locations in one image, as well as most of the rest of Yorkshire: https://www.dropbox.com/s/s4j4dg8cozpulnl/Northern%20England.png. A = Arncliffe, B = the purpose-built Harewood Estate village, C = Creskeld Hall aka Home Farm, D = Studio Road, Leeds, E = Esholt, F = Sunny Bank Mills Studios, Farsley
This has gone well beyond the scope of AnnaS's question, but I hope it was interesting! :) I only found out some of this stuff myself Monday night!
More for AnnaS: Declan and Faye became allies when trying to get justice for Ryan. They must have exchanged numbers then. More to the point why didn't Jai have her number, as they used to go out?! People are too quick to dispose of phone numbers just for the sake of it. As this has shown, you never know when you might need a phone number again sometime! Faye went to stay with friends in San Francisco, and Ryan didn't have any firm plans beyond a couple of weeks! The other strange thing is that Faye left 18 months earlier - why has she left the house empty all this time?!

Colin: tack för den intressanta informationen!
Jag undrade också hur Fayes hus kunde stå tomt fortfarande.
