Lite trivia från Colin (på engelska)

Hi Folks,

I know it’s a bit late now(!) but I’ve been meaning to post with some information about the music heard at the end of Christmas days’ episodes.

First a bit of background information. As many will know, the song was “The Power of Love”, originally a December 1984 UK number one (the last before “Do They Know It’s Chirstmas?”) for Frankie Goes to Hollywood (and is not to be confused with the two major hit records of the same name from 1985!). It was their third number one with their third release. This was only the second time this had ever happened (the previous time this happened was in 1963 with fellow Liverpool band Gerry and the Pacemakers, and it wouldn’t happen again for another five years).

The singer of the cover version goes by the stage name of Slow Moving Millie. In the run up to Christmas 2011 the British public were very used to the sound of her voice, as her recording of The Smiths song “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” was used for the Christmas advertising campaign of ‘John Lewis’, an upmarket department store. It’s actually a really nice advert – take a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSLOnR1s74o

Mille – real name Amelia Warner – once dated my namesake, Mr Farrell, and is now married to Jamie Dorman from “Once Upon a Time” and the 2006 film of “Marie Antoinette”. Far more interesting for Emmerdale fans however is that her father is Alun Lewis AKA Vic Windsor!  The advert and her parentage may of course have been coincidental to the decision to feature her, but it does seem as though she recorded a special version for the show. One of my favourite parts of the Emmerdale version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPjZM6a1jKc – beware the right hand panel of spoilers!!) is the twinkly piano bit heard at the very end. This is barely heard (and isn’t as twinkly) on the album version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJxnN2n_oWg) which is also much slower than the version heard on Emmerdale. There doesn’t seem to have been a  “single version” so I’m not sure where else the Emmmerdale version would have come from?

The album, Renditions, seems well worth a purchase if you like her FGTH and Smiths covers. It has six other 1980’s covers (note that her version of “Head over Heels” is the Tears for Fears song, not ABBA!) as well as two self-penned tracks.

Curiously, John Lewis featured a fairly similar version of The Power of Love for last years’ Christmas campaign (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N8axp9nHNU). I prefer Slow Moving Millie’s version myself and think they should have stuck by her!

A couple of other points while I’m here. Finlandskan asked about Betty. Sadly she had to take quite a lot of time off (no reason was given) and won’t reappear until July 2012. Edna mentioned just before Ashley’s remarriage to Laurel that she had gone on a cruise with Biff.

Regarding the Dingle family tree, Linn is correct, but I shall add a couple more points. Gennie’s birth mother died during child birth. Shadrach had her adopted rather than reveal the affair to his wife Faith. Faith appeared in a few episodes in 2000 and again in 2004. It was during her first stint that she revealed to Zak that he was Cain’s father.

Talking of family trees, I thought it very strange that there was no mention of Andy’s father Billy Hopwood when they had the tests done for Sarah. That storyline by the way was first planned in 2010, but it had to be postponed because of Charley Webb’s pregnancy. There was no Cameron or Alicia back then of course, and the then producer Gavin Blyth sadly died, so it would have been interesting to see how differently it would have played out had it not been delayed. Unfortunately Charley and Matthew Wolfenden (David) recently separated. Many of you will know that Jeff Hordley (Cain) and Zoe Henry (Rhona) are a real life couple. I don’t remember it being on mentioned on here though that Chris Chittel (Eric) and Lesley Dunlop (Brenda) are also a couple.

OK, that’s enough chatter from me for now! I shall probably disappear again for a while, but I’ll be back!
