Part 1

Outside Victoria Cottage, Betty is telling Edna she doesn’t think it’s right having no proper vicar in the village, and asks her what the problem is about. Edna says she’d really rather not discuss it, but Betty is no longer bothered as just then she sees a taxi binging Sally home. Edna tells her it’s a delicate matter and she’ll only make things worse by interfering. Edna approaches Sally and says she should have said she was coming out today. “Thought it would be a nice surprise”, explains Sally.

Anya and Thomas are having a food fight and making Nicola stressed. She goes back to work this afternoon and so it’s Angelica’s first day at nursery. If she’s upset, so will Angelica be, which will ruin the experience for her. Carl meanwhile tries to offload the responsibility of looking after the children onto Chas, who says no.

Charity is looking for job vacancies again. “You know maybe next time you should go for something a little less dangerous, like being a lion tamer”, suggests Debbie. Cain though has changed his mind and says she should try getting a permanent job with Carl. “I think a career in haulage has distinct possibilities”, he explains, and thinks she should persuade him.

In the café, Nicola tells Jimmy she is worried because she thought Angelica would cry being left with a stranger. “Maybe she was so upset that she couldn’t get her tears out?” However she also doesn’t want to let Natasha down. Viv wants Nicola to get all the insider info from Home Farm. She says she knows how to be discreet but Betty thinks it’s more likely that Natasha simply doesn’t trust her. When Betty then announces that Sally is back Nicola compares her to a limpet. Before she can say anymore, Jimmy tells her if she wants a lift to work it has to be now.

Natasha has come to see Diane. She declines the offer of a drink, and explains she came to ask Diane to keep an eye on Maisie. She thinks she’s too upset to work and Diane admits she hasn’t been coping very well. Natasha gets upset when she asks if she thinks Mark will come back. She doesn’t want him too, but Will misses him so much. Diane says she needs a friend, while Natasha says she needs that drink, after all.

At Woodbine, Sally has had a bath. Edna has taken some time off so that they can talk about the allegations she made. “They’re not allegations. I told the truth.” Edna tells her she’s asked Ashley about it and he isn’t a liar. “All men are liars, that’s how they get what they want. You’ve not had much experience with the opposite sex, have you Edna? That’s why you’ve been so easily taken in.” Edna says she isn’t a fool and doesn’t believe Ashley would be unfaithful. “So you’re calling me a liar?” Edna looks at her intently.

Nikhil comes round to collect his money from the car sale, and invites Debbie for a few drinks tonight to help him spend it. She agrees, saying it’s the best offer she’s had all day.

Edna tells Sally as a friend that she’s going down the wrong path. He doesn’t have feelings for her and nothing she says will change that. Sally again insists that Ashley has used her and is the one telling lies. “Let it go! It’ll be better for you in the long run.” “What do you know about what’s good for me?” “I know what the bible tells us. ‘Woe unto them who call evil good, and good evil’. You should leave this village now. Start a new life somewhere-” “Are you throwing me out?” “I’m asking you to leave.” “But I’ve nowhere else to go.” “From what I’ve seen of you, you’ll always find somewhere.” Sally laughs. “Be very careful what you say to me Edna. I don’t take kindly to those that turn against me.” “That’s as maybe…but I’d be grateful if you would pack your bags, now.” Sally laughs, stands over Edna, and stares at her manically before leaving.

Part 2

At the café, Carl is letting the children have three courses of ice cream. Chas says at least it’s keeping them happy. Aaron is in the café too. “Never seemed to bother that much with me.” “So why don’t you come over here and let me show you that I’ve changed.” “Must be joking.” Charity comes in for her money for yesterday. Carl says “after all the scams you’ve pulled I think you owe me a days’ work, so you can whistle for it.” Chas angrily tells him to give her what she’s due, but Charity tells her not to bother. “The way he’s going he’s going to run out of friends and favours pretty damn soon.” Chas agrees and storms off.

Diane tells Natasha that when she first came to the village everyone thought she was the woman who had everything. Natasha says she didn’t realize how easily it could all slip away. “You’re a fighter. You’ll bounce back.” Natasha says she is worried about Will because he has taken it very badly. “He keeps asking when his Daddy’s coming back, and I don’t know what to tell him. I feel so guilty.” Diane tells her she has nothing to feel guilty about. She tells her Victoria blamed her when Jack died. Although she knew it wasn’t her fault it didn’t stop her feeling guilty. Diane assures her she’ll get through it and that she’s there if she needs any support.

Thomas and Anya are playing at Pear Tree and want Scarlett to play with them because they are bored. Edna tries testing them with times tables. Thomas says it’s boring but Anya says that’s just because he is rubbish at it. When he reveals he likes cars Edna suggests he draw his favourite, a Porsche, saying she doesn’t know what they look like. Meanwhile Scarlett sees Carl in the office and makes clear that she is not a nanny. As she leaves for lunch, Jimmy arrives for his next job. When Charity comes in, Carl sends the kids to go with Jimmy to York.

Natasha has forgotten that Nicola is coming back to work and is surprised to see her there. Natasha doesn’t think she is up to working yet. With most of the shoots cancelled and not much else to do, Natasha suggests Nicola comes back next week. Nicola says she can’t go and collect Angelica yet as she needs to learn about separation. Natasha laughs saying it’s a bit soon for that. Nicola explains she doesn’t want to turn into one of those mothers who only talks about babies. Betty comes on the pretence of offering support. Having heard that Mark left in a bit of a hurry, she explains that the church is always after quality men’s clothing for the poor, and so offers to take them off her hands. Nicola tells her she is about as subtle as a brick and shows her the door. It’s got Natasha thinking though, but Nicola says she wouldn’t want to see Shadrach ending up wearing them. “What a horrible thought”, says Natasha. Nicola advises getting all his favourite ones and cutting them into tiny pieces. She admits it’s a spiteful and meaningless gesture but says it would be a lot of fun. Natasha laughs “Oh I’ve missed you Nicola.”

Scarlet returns to Pear Tree and wonders why Charity is in the office. Inside, Carl tells Charity that even if he has to pay the money to talk Chas round, it’d be worth it to get rid of her. “Yesterday’s gone. Let’s talk about the future. You still need a driver.” Carl says the agency will send a dozen to choose from. Charity says they have a lot in common, like running multi-million pound businesses from Home Farm. “Your glory days are long gone, love”. Charity says they are both working their way back up, and that neither of them has ever settled for second best. “So isn’t it better to have someone like that on your team, or some clock watcher who’s only serving time.” She says she’ll work a weeks’ trial and if he’s still got doubts she’ll walk away. “If not, I’m on the team.” “And if I’m not convinced? I don’t have to pay?” “Offer you can’t refuse.”

5:25 pm. At the Woolpack Debbie has met Nikhil for a drink. She was late because she had to take Sarah to Lisa’s to babysit. She asks Nikhil if he has any kids. “Well you know I haven’t, I’m not even married.” He says he’s been with a few women in the past but was always too involved in the business. “Well there is more to life than balance sheets”, remarks Debbie. Nikhil says Jai keeps telling him the same thing, and perhaps it’s time he took his advice.

Edna has gone round to Mulberry to see Ashley. She tells him Sally has gone, and that the look in her eyes when she asked her quite frightened her, though she wonders if it was just her imagination. Ashley says for the first time in ages he can see light at the end of the tunnel. “I can’t wait to tell Diane the good news.” With Sandy looking after Gabby, he suggests she come for a drink to celebrate.

Chas arrives home and Carl tells her he’s sorted things with Charity, but Chas already knows about the weeks’ trial. She is angry to hear that he has palmed the children off on Jimmy. He says now they have an extra driver he can spend more time with them but Chas doesn’t believe him. He promises and says he’ll start ringing round schools tomorrow, but Chas says she’s already got him an appointment at Hotten Comp. She warns him not to see it as a free babysitting service – he still needs to be a proper dad to them.

At the Woolpack as Debbie and Nikhil enjoy their drink, Charity and Cain are at the bar. He toasts the new breadwinner. He tells her to keep Carl sweet and keep an eye on the loads. Charity realizes they are going to nick a truck. Cain says they are going to wait until there is something worth nicking - a load of plasmas would pay nicely for the wedding, with some left over. Charity is excited by the idea.

Ashley leaves Mulberry with Edna, and tells her he can’t wait to tell Laurel that Sally has left the village. He feels like a great weight has been lifted from his shoulders. Edna asks if he thinks Laurel will come home now. “I don’t know Edna, but with Sally gone the nightmare’s over. I can really begin to hope again.” Sally watches them from her bedroom at the B&B.

Part 1

As Debbie takes Sarah and Noah to school, Cain and Charity emerge from the King’s van. Charity explains that she was ‘showing him inside’. Debbie says she’d better not let Carl or Jimmy catch her doing that or she won’t have a van or a job. Cain suggests to Noah that they might be able to persuade Charity to take them on a road trip. Debbie though can’t understand why Cain would want to. “Well he knows there’s no point in arguing” explains Charity

Terry sees Ashley passing the B&B and asks to speak to him about Sally. “I really don’t want to get into this again.” Terry explains that he wants to check if Ashley minds her staying there. When he realizes Ashley didn’t know he explains that it’s not as if he can afford to turn customers away. He starts to apologize if it’s a bit awkward. “A bit? She’s making my life hell!” “Do you want me to ask her to leave, then?” “What’s the point? It’s not like she’ll listen!”

Will is looking out of the window at Home Farm and tells Natasha he isn’t going into school today. Natasha tells him he can’t put his life on hold waiting for his dad to come home. Nathan suggests to him though that they both have a day off and go for a burger. He says he knows it’s tough without dad, but he’ll always have him and Maisie, even though she smells a bit!

At Tenant House, Faye and Ryan still have a very frosty relationship. He thought Mark might have sent for her by now. She says even if she’d wanted to join him she has no idea where he is. “Well let’s hope it stays that way.”

Edna and Betty get a shock when they see Sally coming out of the cafe. As the Wylde children come in Nathan tells Will this is a one-off. He says he used to be the first one in school every day, but Maisie says that’s just because he used to fancy his teacher, who was about fifty. He denies it. Ryan comes through from the shop too as there was no-one to pay for his bottle of milk. He walks silently past the Wyldes. When Will tries to make conversation with him, Ryan manages – without even looking at him - a “Hi Will” as he collects his change, but then leaves immediately, leaving Will wondering what is up with him.

Ashley is in the church, praying, until he is disturbed by Sally. She says she won’t abandon him in his hour of need, unlike Laurel. She knows it’s more difficult now everyone is talking, but it doesn’t mean they have to walk away from everything they had. “We don’t have anything!! Do you think if you say it enough times it’ll somehow make it true?” “It is.” Ashley says she can invent whatever fantasies she likes but she can’t make them real. “When will you get it through your head? I will never, ever have feelings for you.” Sally just looks at him.

At the café, Betty and Viv are gossiping about the Wydes and their newly discovered brother. Maisie tells Nathan they are being talked about and Will wants to know what they are saying. Maisie and Nathan decide it’s best to go home. When Will asks Viv if she was talking about his dad she denies it. He tells her he’s only gone away for a bit and will be back soon. “I’m surprised you want him back after what he’s done.” “What do you mean?”, Will enquires. There is a moment of silence as Viv realizes he didn’t know. Nathan tells him that it’s complicated. They hurry him out. “Everyone else seems to understand. It’s not fair, why won’t anyone tell me?” Viv feels guilty.

At the church Sally says that as much as she loves Ashley, he can be such a coward at times. “Finally something we agree on! I should have had the guts to tell you to leave when Laurel first asked me to.” “But you didn’t. Surely that must tell you something!” “Only that I’m a fool!” As the confrontation continues, Edna approaches the church. “You’re just scared to face up to how you really feel, that’s why I have to do it for you! Everyone already thinks we’re having an affair, you’ve got nothing to lose!” “Apart from my wife!!” “She was never good enough for you anyway.” “That is enough.” “I am sick of people telling me how sweet she is. She is just a brainless bitch!” “How dare you!” exclaims Edna as she enters. “You have already done enough damage with your lies. I will not let you poison this church with any more of your bile.”

As the Wyldes return to Home Farm, Will still wants to know what Viv was talking about. Nathan tells him she got it wrong. Natasha wants to know what’s going on, so Nathan tells Will to get something to eat as he didn’t finish his lunch. “So everyone can talk behind my back again? What’s new!” Will slams the door behind him, and Natasha gets told about the café incident. “I told you I didn’t want him going down there.” “Mum, you can’t keep him locked away forever”, says Maisie. Natasha says she can’t break his heart, but Nathan says he deserves to know the truth and if they don’t tell him someone else will.

Part 2

At the church, Edna tells Sally she almost had her believe that Ashley betrayed his wife. Sally says he wanted to. “He was too afraid of what old crones like you might say.” They realize her friendliness was just an act and that she has been lying from the moment she arrived in the village. “Was any of it true?” asks Edna. Sally is silent. “Did Vincent ever hurt you?” “You saw the bruises.” Ashley rises as he has an epiphany, and says “But we never actually saw him hit you.” “He threw a brick through your window” “But he always denied it. Said he wasn’t even there.” “Of course he did it. Who else could it have been?” “You!”, realizes Edna.

Nicola is carrying Home Farm files through the village, and doesn’t accept Charity’s offer of help. “I know what your game is: playing all helpful now, and then when it suits you, you’ll take whatever, and whoever you want.” “If you’re talking about Jimmy I had my fill of him a long time ago.” Charity asks why, if Jimmy loves her, she thinks she could have him even if she wanted him. “I know what you’re like.” Nicola thinks she will split up with Cain again in a few weeks. “I hope not, we’re planning the wedding for then.” Charity rubs it in that she will be married first. Nicola is seething.

Outside the garage, Cain tells Charity that Debbie isn’t buying his new man routine. Charity doesn’t like lying to her. “We’ve only just got over what happened last time.” “Well we can’t tell her.” “So maybe we should just forget the whole thing?” “I thought you wanted to get hitched.” “Not if Debbie’s not there.” “Yeah, well we’ll just have to make sure that she doesn’t find out.”

The Wyldes’ get Will to sit down. He thinks they’ve found Mark. Natasha explains that it is about what happened before he left. She starts by telling him how much Mark loves him, and saying how proud he was the day Will was born. She goes on to explain that before he met her, he had another family, another wife, and another son. “No he didn’t” protests Will. Maisie tells him it’s true. “He would have told me.” Nathan shakes his head angrily. Natasha continues that Mark didn’t really know about it himself until Faye and Ryan came to the village. “How did they know?” Natasha finally explains that Mark was married to Faye; and Ryan is their son, and his brother. Will tries to take it all in.

Back at the chuch, Edna says she is going to call the bishop. “What’s that old hypocrite gonna do? Give me a ticking off and tell me to say my prayers?” Sally says they can’t prove she gave herself a black eye, and even if they could they won’t get rid of her that easily. “Try me! Just try me! I may be an old crone, but I will not stand by and watch you destroy the people that I care about!” “There’s nothing you can do. You can’t throw me out of the village.” “You won’t be welcome once I’ve told people…just how deranged you actually are.” “And if that doesn’t work, I’ll kick you out myself”, adds Ashley. Then he has a distressing thought. “I’m starting to believe…you actually tried to kill my wife.” She says it wasn’t hard to fool him into risking his marriage. “You can’t have cared much whether she lived or died.” “You’re the one I wish was dead!”, he yells at her. “I would rather see you in hell, than have to put up with you for one minute longer, so pack your bags and leave, or I’ll call the police, and if they can’t arrest you they’ll have to arrest me, because if I see you near my family again, I will kill you myself”, he concludes, bellowing.

Will is still trying to take the news in. “I’ve spoken to him loads. He never said anything to me.” Maisie and Nathan explain that neither he nor they knew. “Then maybe it’s not true.” Natasha says she wouldn’t put him through this if she wasn’t sure. A distressed Maisie storms out saying she wasn’t sure enough to tell them before. Nathan goes after her. Will doesn’t understand and wants to talk to Mark. Natasha tells him he didn’t tell the truth about a lot of things – he’s still married to Faye, and still has feelings for her. Will asks if he loves her. She nods and breaks down. “That’s why he had to go away you see.” She admits she shouldn’t have promised he’d be coming back, but assures him Mark loves him, and Maisie and Nathan. It’s her he couldn’t live with anymore. “So he’s never coming home” Natasha struggles to find the words. “No I don’t think he is.” Will breaks down. She hugs him close and tells him how sorry she is.

Nicola suggests to Jimmy they book the wedding for June 26th. “I thought we were having a break from planning.” He thinks June is too soon. “Not if we’re organized. We managed the christening in a few weeks.” “Only by making everyone else’s life a misery”, pipes up Chas. Carl agrees that he can’t go through that again – especially now he’s got the kids. Nicola says she wants Angelica to have a proper family as soon as possible. “We don’t even have the same name at the moment.” The few months work will be worth it to finally be his wife. Jimmy agrees they should find a venue and set a date as soon as possible.

Ashley and Edna have come to see Diane. She is amazed that Sally gave herself a black eye. Edna wonders if they should have persuaded her to get medical help but Ashley says she would never agree to it. He says after the harm she has done his family she can throw herself off a bridge for all he cares. “I just want her to leave me alone.”

Nathan finds Natasha in the kitchen. He tells her Maisie is in her room crying. Natasha says Will isn’t even talking to her. “He’ll be fine”, says Nathan. Natasha sits down. “I shouldn’t have said anything.” “Mum, you should have said something a long time ago.” She says telling Will was the hardest thing she’s ever had to do. Her voice begins to break again as she says it’s all her fault. “No. No mum it’s not.” “I hate him for what he’s made me do” She wonders what the hell she is supposed to do now. Nathan says Will will come round, and it won’t keep Maisie down. “It’s different this time”. Nathan says they’ll have to stay strong for each other.

Ashley is with Edna still, and apologizes to Terry if he overreacted earlier. He wants to take him up on his offer of asking Sally to leave. Edna explains that they all need her out of their lives once and for all. Terry says they are in luck then as she left about an hour ago. “You can stop worrying – by the look on her face, she won’t be back.

Charity asks Cain to come inside and give her a back rub, since he is now an attentive new man. He realizes she is going to milk it. Carl comes along and tells her he needs her to do an overnight trip to Glasgow. She says she’ll do it if he starts paying her.

Ashley is amazed Sally is finally gone. Edna thinks maybe she has finally seen sense. But as they get to Mulberry they find the door is open. The house has been wrecked – furniture destroyed, possessions scattered around, and painting on the walls, including “Burn in Hell”. Ashley says it is his fault too. “Laurel was convinced Sally tried to kill her, and I wouldn’t listen. If she hadn’t gone away, she could be dead by now.” “No you mustn’t think like that. She’s perfectly safe.” “No thanks to me.” He says he was “so damn stubborn. I refused to see…I could have got it wrong.” He sees a family photo on the floor, and picks it up, tears swelling. “Laurel will never forgive me now. And I don’t deserve it anyway. I’ve lost her, because of my own stupidity. And that’s worse…than any mess Sally can leave behind.”

All in all that's not too bad a way to end the season. It's certainly better than it would have been if they hadn't missed an episode two weeks ago.

I know Sally hasn't been a popular character with many, but at least it's given Shirley Stellfox (Edna) some good scenes. We had more today as well from the wonderful Oscar Lloyd as Will - poor little Lamb!

Well done again to those who've spotted Charley Webb's pregnancy! Debbie's departure won't be quite so dramatic as Laurel's, but for now I'm saying nothing else on that matter!

Stay tuned for more exciting "HTG" from January 9th! Hopefully Marie will be fit and well long before then!
