Regarding recent comments about spoiler information I do feel I have comments I should apologise for. Before I do I would like to put some things in context by giving some of my own opinion on Christmas Day 2008.

As you will know, I enjoyed it very much. However I did have one criticism. Bearing in mind that we already knew that, sadly, we would never be seeing Jack again, I thought they overplayed the idea that Victoria’s life was seriously in danger. I never for a single second thought that Victoria might die – as the unavoidable absence of Jack from her funeral would have stretched believability too much. The under-the-water scenes I have no problem with – it was very dramatic and there was a story that needed telling. Watching it back again I think the main thing I object to is the 20-second scene which basically consisted simply of Daz giving mouth-to-mouth. Perhaps a 5-second cutaway from the church would have been fine but personally I felt that they overdid the suspense of whether she’d regain consciousness or not.

Bearing in mind that everybody knew Clive Hornby had died, I never really thought that anybody else would think Victoria’s life was in danger, either. After reading through an archive discussion of the episode last night, I now realise that, for whatever reason, some people actually DID question if Victoria would live.

I would therefore like to apologise for previously revealing that nobody would die between Matt and Jack. I didn’t consider it to be a spoiler because I didn’t think anyone would expect Victoria to die anyway, given the situation with Jack/Clive Hornby.

I also would like to say that I possibly revealed too much about today. Although I didn’t explicitly say that the body was found, I did make clear we would see the body again and also referred to the “Most Spectacular Scene Award”. It was only the remarks about Christmas Eve’s ending being distasteful etc. that prompted me to say as much as I did. I also think that the way Christmas Eve ended was supposed to be a big clue to the imminent discovery of the body anyway. I hope I didn’t cross the line with those comments but if I gave it away to anyone who hadn’t already guessed it would be discovered then I am sorry for that too.

Finally – and realising I wanted to make the second apology, I deliberately left it to do in one go – I would like to apologise for commenting that I feel the King brothers work well as a pair. I had forgotten there was the brief period where they considered leaving the village and my comments obviously gave away that they stuck around.

I will endeavour not to give away any more spoilers, and hope that anybody who felt today was spoiled in any way by things I’d previously said will accept my apology.

Now I must stop for lunch!

@Colin. I thought this episode was one of the best I´ve seen so far, but I also feel that it could have been a bit better due to the rather weird editing. The dramatic clip with Victoria and the more humorous clip in the middle of it clashed a bit.

"Nobody likes me!"

Right, the next thing is – why did I smile at Mariann’s post? To paraphrase, she wrote: “Men jag blev faktiskt rädd. Now this is where it depends on the translation. If I had been using Microsoft Translator I’d have read it as: “But I was really afraid. Almost so I did not see where in the end when zoomed in on likpåsen .... I was afraid!” However, because I was using Google Translate I got: “But I was actually scared. Almost as I closed my eyes there on the end when they zoomed in it off.... I was scared!” This version reminded me very much of what Victoria said when she regained consciousness, telling Daz “I was so scared” – twice! Then in the ambulance she remarks that she daren’t close her eyes – it’s kind of the opposite of what Mariann said but they do both mention eyes being closed! It was almost as if Mariann had seen the script haha!

A couple of points on Marie’s summary – Belle stayed at the church and is standing right in front of Gennie as she sings. Victoria doesn’t know it is Shane – all she saw was a hand. Remember no-one else knows he is dead yet and I’m not sure Victoria would know him anyway. It’s a good point about Daz performing the resuscitation – I suppose it was dramatic licence so that he was the one Victoria would turn to for comfort as she came round. I am mystified by your reference to “Adams” Christmas song. Is it the Swedish title for “O Holy Night”??

>> Åsa, I always feel more disappointed when long-term fans express unhappiness. I suppose it is inevitable though because the longer you have watched, the more you will have seen the show change, but it seems a shame when such dedicated viewers begin to feel like switching off. I will say again what I said to others – things do improve. We are nearing the end of Anita Turners era as producer of the show. The majority of people would tell you that her successor was – he sadly passed away - a very good producer, and under his reign the quality was much more consistent. His episodes appear on screen when you reach March 2009. Because of the long-term planning involved in a soap it takes a bit of time though of course for someone to bring about changes and I would advise you to try and stick with it until you reach August 2009 (which should be around August 2011). By then I think you should have a feel for what his era is like. I gave as an example a “real-time” episode (e.g. like “24”) from August ’09 which features just five characters – and is written and directed by the same pairing that wrote and directed both “Heartbreak” (Daniels death), and the episodes you saw today. There are still things worth watching in Anita’s era, too – there is a new family taking over at Home Farm soon (I think they will arrive Friday next week) and they have had some of the biggest storylines of the past two years. You’re also not far away now from Jack’s passing.

>>Pandora, I’m glad you enjoyed it and thought it one of the best – I can’t argue with that and feel especially sad having to write the above paragraph after todays’ episodes. I think it was probably quite tricky working out when to make the scene changes – bear in mind that roughly 95% of the second half of the show was just two stories. The church scenes were also quite short, and although I take your point about them clashing, they certainly needed to cut back to it at least that final time. I think Sian Reese-Williams who plays Gennie has a beautiful voice and I love her rendition of the carol and I almost get disappointed when they switch to the second version, although if I’m honest that version does work better over the final scenes. As for the closing credits music, it does sound similar to the original theme – and so did the version used at the end of 2006’s Christmas episode funnily enough. Alas they’d never change it back – I think they think it’s too old-fashioned sounding for todays’ young folk. They’re probably right. Even Coronation Street had its theme slightly reworked last year, and that had sounded almost the same since the show started in 1960!!

I too think the younger actors did a good job with this episode – I’m not sure if ALL of Scarlett’s screaming sounded good, but certainly when she was on screen I thought her terror looked quite convincing. Isabel Hodgins (Victoria) did all her own stunt work by the way. As for the very young stars I agree that Eden as Belle is good, and I also like Annelise who plays Gabby. For someone so small she had quite a lot to do in 2008 and I thought she did a good job. Personally I like Connor who plays TJ too. Granted, he doesn’t act that much but at least he’s got a cute face! My favourite of the past couple of years though is the young lad who will soon be coming in with the new Home Farm family. I can’t promise he’ll be great from the moment he gets there, but certainly by the end of 2011 I think you’ll be agreeing with me. Actually I do worry about Eden Taylor-Draper as an actress – she’s 14 months older than Belle, and, at 13, still seems to struggle when she needs to be upset. In a scene earlier this year she was supposed to be tearful but all we saw was her completely cover her face. Perhaps I am wrong and this was just an artistic choice – I’d like to think so but if not she’ll need to improve further if she is going to stay in the show long-term. Back to what’s been on-screen in Sweden, I think there was a time when little Connor acted: when TJ was sick with food poisoning – the story seemed to suit him perfectly!!

Did anybody notice the twinkling sound at the end of the opening theme? A nice little touch I thought – as well as the fact that the episode started more or less where Christmas Eve finished, only above the water this time! I liked the way the suspense was built over the episode – it was surely obvious by the end of part 2 that someone was going to fall through the ice. They arrived at the ice almost one-by-one and all (some to a lesser extent than others) looked like they might be the one to plummet at one stage or another. Bishop George was quite funny “Oh shut up...this isn’t live I hope?” The look on his face haha. As for the song at the end, I must say I love Christmas music – both pop and carols, but O Holy Night was one that had slipped under my radar a little bit, so to speak. It doesn’t seem to appear on CD’s very often and I would never have considered it as one of my favourites. Now though, I think it’d have to be in my top ten carols and I can’t think of the song without thinking of its use in this episode. I feel I know the end of the episode of by heart now haha! I think it must have been a specially recorded version – the musical flourish at the end I think sounds unusual for a standard choral version and fits perfectly with the Christmas Emmerdale theme that follows it. The fade to black at the end was unusual as well of course – as was the flashback. I liked the sort of echo-ey scream they used for that.

I’m sorry some didn’t enjoy it but I’d definitely give it 9/10. As Shadrach said, that’s what I call a chirstmas!!

Erik, I think I can safely answer you first question. I don't know how TV4's translator coped with Victoria's opening line after she regained consciousness, so it may be helpful to point out that she was trying to say "there's a body down there". But of course, she has to now think about whether or not people will believe her or think she's going mad. So whether she says it again more clearly I couldn't possibly comment! But one way or another that body is surely like a ticking bomb now...

Colin: maybe you can answer this: Here in Sweden we are used to snow and ice, but winters in Britain aren't so cold, are they? How could there be a lake with such a thick ice? Where was the scene filmed? Not in the neighbourhood of "Emmerdale"? Perhaps in Scotland? this thought suddenly occured to me, and made me wonder. Do you know the truth?

Yes, Luke Tiitensor shared the role of Carl Gallagher with his twin Elliott in the first series of Shameless. Luke then took on the role of Daz and Elliott took over as Carl full-time from series 2.

>> Erik, that is a very good question. At the time there were two behind the scenes videos. They’ve long gone from the ITV site and they’re not on youtube either. Unfortunately I never saw them but I have seen other people discussing them. Basically the whole lake was faked. It was filmed over three days at a caravan park (that comes from an interview with Isabel Hodgins, which I’ll link to at the end). I’m guessing the surface of the lake was possibly filmed on a raised platform, because the bit where Victoria falls in had a special sheet of Perspex as the ice, and underneath that was a tank of water. Or perhaps they dug a hole for the tank to go into? Someone who looks after Emmerdale’s webcams explained that the underwater scenes were filmed at Fleetwood Nautical College.

The Isabel Hodgins interview comes from the British Soap Awards 2009. There is a spoiler but if you can start watching from after 4:15 and stop at 6:18, you’ll be fine. The man speaking at the start is director Lee Salisbury. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IDTO53TGaI

I’m sure the “Suggested Videos” change from time to time, so while it is safe I will also direct people to a video from the 2008 awards – where “Line Producer” Tim Fee receives a Special Achievement Award. He retired in 2009 and gets his last credit in June 09. The presenters you see were at the time the regular hosts of “This Morning” – and they appeared in an episode in 2005 when Alan appeared on the show hoping to find out what had happened to Shelley Williams. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0dcPOz5trg&feature=related

On the subject of Belle, here she is at the 2007 awards after winning "Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor or Actress" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw4V7FSsAag&feature=fvwrel

I probably said a little more than I really needed to about Victoria yesterday evening. I was trying to rush as it was nearly time for Emmerdale, and was thinking: 'but if I make clear that she knows they'll expect everyone else to find out in Tuesdays episodes'. I should of course have left people to make that incorrect assumption rather than say all that other stuff. So sorry, again! :o

It's worth remembering also that it was filmed something like 6-8 weeks before christmas so I doubt if even Scotland would have had frozen lakes, not to mention that filming on a real lake would have been quite dangerous! It's good that we get fooled though - it shows that the set designers have done their job well!
